How did you get started in golf?
I was a tennis player. But I got tired of always trying to find a partner. So at 29, I decided to try something different. I was out at the driving range one day when I met Louise Parks. She was an LPGA Tour Pro. She thought I had a natural swing. So I went to the San Diego Golf Academy where she taught.
Who was your greatest influence in golf?
Louise Parks obviously. She inspired me to achieve new goals. She had faith in me. And she convinced me that life is too short not to spend the rest of my life doing something I love. A.J. Bonar was also a mentor of mine. He always said, ÒI wish they'd take the numbers off the clubs.Ó
What do you like most about golf?
I love the challenge. You can never master this game. There's always room for improvement. I also love when my students report their successes Ð holes in one, the first time they break 100. It's no longer about how I play the game, but how well I teach others. So I work hard to make golf fun for all of my students.
What is the one thing you try to teach your students?
That golf can be fun. It's the most beautiful outdoor sport you can play. Golf should be fun, it's not another job. So don't take it too seriously. Don't let it be a fight. It's a great equalizer. Whether you're a CEO or a grandmother, it adds an element of humility for everyone. The key is to set realistic goals Ð this is a very difficult game to stay on top of. You would have to practice 40 hours a week, and that's not realistic. So I try to create a safe haven for learning.
How has golf changed for women?
Leaps and bounds! Nike Golf Learning Centers is great for women. We guarantee that they will get out on the course, so it's not just driving-range learning. Women are more intimidated by the etiquette and spirit of the game, so they don't go out on the course. We create a safe haven that extends out onto the course.
What do you like most about teaching?
The happiness of my students. I love when they report their successes, and I get to see their excitement at achieving one of their goals. I've been teaching for 10 years, but now, with Nike, I feel closer to my students. I've never felt that closeness with my students until the Nike Golf Learning Centers came along.

Stephen has been a member of the PGA for 5 years. He has been teaching golf for 12 years and playing for 35. What he likes most about teaching golf is the fun experience involved in seeing students learning the game. "If I can get the student involved early with success, I have a good chance of hooking them on the game." This coincides with his goals for new golfers. He wants them to be able to have, keep and maintain an interest in the game. Also to understand the ups and downs of the game, enjoy the beauty of the game, and how you can enjoy playing with other players with different ability levels. Stephen's dad encouraged him to take up the game when he was five, and a member at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver. What he enjoys most about golf is being able to travel around the world and playing a game that is basically the same, but with different, unique surroundings. He has taught at three locations in the Denver area, as well as having spent two seasons on Carnival cruise ships teaching golf. Stephen attends every possible workshop he can in order to sharpen his teaching skills as best he can. He has worked with and received instruction from Mike McGetick, Phil Ritson, Michael Hebron, and Dave Leadbetter. He has also attended workshops given by Hank Haney, Michael Adams, Dave Pelz, Rick Smith, and the PGA Teaching Summit in New Orleans. What makes Stephen most proud to be a teaching professional is sharing the best experiences of the game from a personal side, as well as being able to share what he has learned from the top professionals, with his students. Stephen grew up playing Cherry Hills in Denver, 5 years after Arnold Palmer won his only US Open. He currently plays Tour Edge blades, Bazooka titanium woods and a St. Charles putter.

Simi Valley, CA (2 for 1)
This is one of my favorite places to play for a variety of reasons.Ê It is inexpensive,
the course is challenging, and the greens are always in good shape.Ê I consider
this one of American Golf's best public courses in our general area.Ê Best of
all, unlike many of its AGC brethren, they will treat you well and help out
whenever possible.Ê The people at Simi are always willing to accept our 2 for
1 and free range certificates, and they love helping out the Club by giving
us advance tee times without a surcharge.Ê If you don't mind the 50 minute ride
into Simi Valley, this course is the place to be.
