A very early picture of Locke as a South African phenomenon, mid-1930s.
Bobby in 1936 as a lad of about 19, winner of his country's Open and
visiting England for the first time. He got knocked out of the British
Amateur that year, but did a respectable job in the Open (top 20).
Locke' first year as a professional, 1938, and the year of his first
win, the Irish Open at Portmarnock, where he defeated the legendary
Henry Cotton.
Just after WWII, 1945.
Locke in 1947 when he dominated the Americans, seen here with one of
his few US friends at the time, Ed "Porky" Oliver, himself quite a golfer.

1949, the year the American pros banned him from the PGA Tour events,
but also the year he won his greatest Championship, the Open, for the
first time.
1951, Locke just missing the US Open, won that year by Hogan at Oakland
Hills, the Michigan Monster. Locke blew one of the closing holes and
finished third behind Hogan and Clayton Heafner, shown here on the right.
Gary Player, 21 years later, would win the PGA Championship here with
a great high, 150-yard 9-iron from soggy rough over a towering tree
to 4 feet.

1955.
1957, Locke's fourth winning of the Open.
Locke in 1957, near the end of his peak years, with Gary Player, the
next superstar, conquering golf together. Locke won his fourth Open
that year.
"Muffin" Locke, rolling up his sleeves, Vermont, 1972, the year he
was inducted into the Golf Hall of Fame in Foxborough, Pennsylvania,
and won the Vermont Open.
