The Event - History and Past Tournaments

The Masters Tournament is the creation of Bobby Jones and the first Tournament was held in 1934, won by Horton Smith. The history of the event is amply documented at the official website of the Masters. A second nice history is located on the Sports Illustrated site. Teaming up with CNN and the Augusta Chronicle newspaper, the Sports Illustrated coverage includes year-by-year coverage of the Masters in the pages of the Chronicle from the first victory in 1934 through Vijay Singh's win in 2000, as well as Sports Illustrated coverage since 1955. Similarly, this site gives complete final leaderboards for every year. The Sports section of the Augusta Chronicle has a separate collection of stories about the Masters. Golf Digest has a similar archive of past Masters articles. Golfweb/PGA Tour also has Facts & Figures and other History materials. CNNSI / Golfonline has a hole-by-hole Scorecards and Stats for each year 1946-2001.

The Course

The Augusta National Golf Course was designed and construced by Jones and Dr. Alistair McKenzie, with work completed in 1933. Dr. McKenzie is also the designer of Cypress Point and many other famous courses around the world.

The Stats, Records, Past Champions

The Official Masters site has a ton of Stats and Records. Another full set of tournament records is collected here. The Golfonline.com past champions section lists every Masters since 1934, with winners and their scores. Clicking on the winner shows the Masters play for that golfer in every Masters that golfer has ever participated in through the years.
